Originally published: London: Fourth Estate, 2007 Truly vital reading, 'Six Degrees' shows us a way to forge a new world before it's too late As the temperature creeps us degree by degree, chapter by chapter, Lynas takes us through these six stages of global warming and issues a global warning: act now, or risk mass extinction. In this explosive book Mark Lynas investigates scientists' claims that the next century will see global temperatures rise between one and six degrees, with devastating results. In others, deluges of flood water ravage the earth. Arid land cracks and peels in some areas of the globe. What if average temperatures rose by up to six degrees in the next 100 years? Entire nations are uninhabitable. 'Six Degrees' is an eye-opening and vital account of the future of our Earth and our civilisation if current rates of global warming persist.

“Coal? What are you doing onboard? You should be back on the Star.” The weapon aimed at his chest lowered a second later. Ice had a council member pinned to a wall but he jerked his arm up to point at Coal. He rounded a twist in the ship’s belly and nearly ran straight into the small group of people clustered there.Ĭoal studied the two cyborgs locked together in an obvious tense moment. Loud, angry voices drew him and he increased his pace, ignoring the burn in his lungs from breathing the contaminated air. Hope flared in Coal that he might make it out alive. He sucked in smoke-filled air and moved forward quickly, fighting a cough. Doors slid open and he realized he’d been holding his breath. The lift dropped quickly and then jerked to a halt. He’d be sealed in the small room, something he feared, trapped there to die. The doors sealed and he clenched his teeth, hoping the power didn’t fail completely. He bounced off and kept going as the lights flickered around him until he entered an open lift to take him one floor down. His feet pounded down the hallway and he didn’t dare slow, taking a blow to his shoulder when he slammed into the corridor wall. Explosions hurt Coal’s ears and he realized he probably wouldn’t escape the Earth shuttle before it blew up. Earlier comments on ending trends still apply but that book is truly a treasure. I read Forbidden for the first time in March and it was a transcendent experience. (Sorry if that sounded spoilery but it’s sort of like watching Titanic for the first time - that ship is sinkin’ for sure.) Of course, Jack and Josie have a fairly unhealthy dynamic and it was probably for the best. I am so grateful for you book recs! I read A Spell of Winter and Jack and Josie a few years ago - both very worth my time though very melancholy in tone and conforming to typical “endgame-incest-would-bring-about-the-apocalypse” conventions. Thank you so much!!! Of course comments are always appreciated but thanks to messages like this I am always able to remind myself that I have a lot of people checking out my stuff silently. This first state entirely lacks the table of contents and dedication statement. first edition was quickly recalled and scrapped because, in the author's words, it was "full of errors, with misplaced and erroneously labeled photographs and diagrams." The book's most amusing moments involve a pack of sorry magicians-the Keystone Kops of sorcery-that Sterren hires to help him fight off the enemies of his new-found homeland: a levitator who needs a psychic push to take off a wet-behind-the-ears wizard with a single working spell and a power-hungry warlock who just can't get the hang of tyranny, and does more good for the peasants in months than the hereditary monarchy had done in centuries. The unwilling warlord of the title, Sterren, is a classic fantasy anti-hero, a tavern gambler and a washout from a warlock apprenticeship with just enough magical power to cheat at dice. Though predictable in outline, this variant is amiable enough, thanks to the author's appealing colloquial style and deft comic touch.
