It then proceeds to tell a tale of persecution and rebellion without ever explaining how the world fell apart, how far into the future the story is set, why fascist communities let neutral librarians bring controversial books into their borders, There’s little description of the world for instance, is the environment destroyed or just society? This was a novella set in a dystopian U.S., yet it could just as easily have been set in an alternate 1800s U.S. This novella opens mid-scene, with Esther caught hiding in a Librarian’s wagon. So much was lacking and left unexplained. There were only broad brushstrokes of a cool concept and not enough filled in to bring this novella to life. My two biggest issues were the lack of detail and the inconsistent tone. That novella had punch this one, not so much. I got this after listening to this author’s novella River of Teeth, an alternate history novella delivering a wonderfully strange western revenge caper with killer hippos and a scene chewing gang of rough riders. ![]()
